Jamaica

We arrived in Kingston, where we bought the book Becka's Buckra Baby by Thomas MacDermod, a Jamaican author also known under his psedonym of Tom Redcam. He was active in the late 1800's and the early 1900's. He has been credited for fostering the creation of Jamaican literature, and the book we bought is seen as the beginning of modern Jamaican literature.

We spent the first day reading the book on one of the Montego Bay beaches, after a while we decided to get moving so we traveled with the train to Kingston where we arrived in the evening.

When we arrived in Kingston, we were pretty messed up. The people on the train was smoking some sort of drug. It's not leagel to smoke weed but the people does it anyway. In Kingston there is lots of historical places. We decided to go to the Bob Marley museum, since he is the king of reggae. At the museum we could see and hear lots of music and pictures of Bob Marley.

We bought some CD's with Bob Marley and we found a cute little doll that looked like Bob Marley but it was just an ordinary rastafari. We bought it because the rastafari is somekind of symbol for Jamaica. Actually the rastafari is some kind of religion and social movement.

When we was done at the museum we decided to go to the old pirate city, Port Royal. Port Royal was the biggest piratebay on Jamaica.

When we finaly decided to go outside Kingston, we went to a traval agency. There a woman told us that the blue mountains is a realy nice spot to experience the Jamaican flora and fauna. We thought that seemed a little bit boring, but she told us that it's possible to go on a tour on a mountainbike with a guide. ”It's gonna get real rough, and you might even break something”, se said with a smirk, but since we're so though, we decided to accept the ”challenge”.
We took a bus with other tourist, looking for some adrenalin action but still experienceing the country, to blue mountains. When we arrived there, we found out that the Blue Mountains themselves actually consist of two ranges, the Central Range and the Port Royal Mountains. We decided to go bicycling on the Port Royal Mountains since our guide told us that it's the highest point in Jamaica at 7,402 feet, and also to the world's second-largest butterfly, the pterourus homerus, formerly known as the papilio homerus (commonly called the great Jamaican swallowtail).
When we finaly got our downhill-bikes and started cycle downhill, we noticed that there were alot of different trees we've never seen before. It looked like some of the trees were infected, since they had no leaves. Our guide told us that the tree is called tree called chusquea abietifolia, and blooms once every 33 years. The next scheduled date for bloom is 2017.
The cycle tour started at an elevation of 5,060 feet and heads downward (of course). We stoped along the way to see coffee plantations and rain forest sights. It was an amazing day.
